Older women still getting Pap smears despite guidelines

NEW YORK (Reuter Health) - Women who've had a hysterectomy, and most women over 65, don't need regular swabs for signs of cervical cancer - but lots of them are getting the test anyway, say U.S. researchers.

Running blog: how was your weekend running?

Anyone else take part in the Great Ethiopian Run, have their picture taken with Haile Gebrselassie and go to the post-race party at his house this weekend?

I've done some fun, lively and atmospheric races in my time, but yesterday will always be the greatest. Not for time ? if I say this isn't a PB course, I might well be in the running for understatement of the century ? but for sheer thrilling, exuberant, noisy atmosphere. About 37,000 people (the official number; judging by the counterfeit-looking race T-shirts, I suspect some racecrashers may have made the tally even higher) were taking part in Africa's biggest race, up and down the hills of Addis Ababa for 10km. At altitude. In full sun.

The start wasn't a start, it was a riot ? the picture above shows runners held back, barely, by baton-wielding police. And the sheer noise! Spontaneous bursts of sound as hundreds of people suddenly started chanting or singing. Or dancing. Or running in zigzags. Or stopping to pose after 500m.

I will be writing more about the Great Ethiopian Run soon, and no doubt boring everyone I know, both virtually and in real life, with my picture of me and Haile Gebrselassie (and the post-race party at his house ?) But now over to you! How was your weekend running? I'm pretty smug in the knowledge that it is unlikely to top mine ?

Nut eaters may have a longer life expectancy

Conclusion
This study found that eating nuts is associated with a reduced risk of death from any cause, and that the more frequently nuts were eaten, the lower the risk of death. Eating 28g of nuts seven or more times per week was associated with a 20% reduced risk of death.
The researchers say that previous studies found that increased nut intake was associated with a reduced risk of several diseases (including type 2 diabetes mellitus, colon cancer, high blood pressure and diverticulitis), and that nut consumption has been linked to reductions in various risk factors for chronic diseases. Seeing whether nut consumption was associated with reduced risk of death was the next step.
The study has many strengths, but also has several limitations that should be considered when interpreting the...

Oral Squamous Papilloma, Multiply Recurrent, in a Patient With Psoriasis Receiving the Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha Antagonist Adalimumab

Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF?) is a cytokine secreted by macrophages that regulates various biologic processes including cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, lipid metabolism, and coagulation. Increased TNF? has been implicated in autoimmune diseases, insulin resistance, and cancer. TNF? antagonists are known to cause reactivation of many bacterial and viral infections. Adalimumab is a monoclonal antibody that neutralizes TNF? activity and induces complement-mediated cell lysis of mononuclear cells expressing TNF?. Sleeping too little, or too much, linked to heart disease, diabetes, obesity

A new study links too little sleep (six hours or less) and too much sleep (10 or more hours) with chronic diseases -- including coronary heart disease, diabetes, anxiety and obesity -- in adults age 45 and older. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine encourages patients suffering from these common chronic conditions to speak with a sleep medicine physician who can evaluate their sleep patterns.

Time for transition? We can help.

Kitty O'Hare, MD

By Kitty O?Hare, MD, coordinator of Transition Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital’s Martha Eliot Health Center.
The field of pediatric medicine has come a long way in the past few decades. Kids with health conditions like sickle cell disease, heart conditions, even cancer are living, full, healthy lives into adulthood.
It’s a great accomplishment, but with increased survival rates come unique challenges. In addition to treating their chronically ill patients, today’s pediatricians need to prepare them for adult life, where they will be responsible for managing their own health. But according to a recent national survey, we doctors aren’t as good at helping our patients transition into adulthood as we could be: less than half of all ...

Genetic mutation provides clues to battling childhood obesity

A new paper identifies a possible genetic root to the insatiable appetite and slow metabolism of some obese patients. The study, which sequenced 2,101 individuals with severe early-onset obesity, found that patients harboring mutations in a particular gene, KSR2, had an increased appetite and a slower metabolism, suggesting that drugs developed to modulate the activity of the protein encoded by the KSR2 gene could provide new treatment options for obesity and Type 2 diabetes.

Heroes of swimming: Johnny Weissmuller

Before he became ridiculously famous as Tarzan, today's hero broke world records for fun ? and was undefeated in 10 years of competition swimming

"So the producer asked my name and he said it would never do. 'It's too long. It'll never fit on a marquee. We'll have to change it.' Then the director butted in: 'Don't you ever read the papers? This guy is the world's greatest swimmer.' The producer said OK, I could keep my name, and he told the writers, 'Put a lot of swimming in the movie, because this guy can swim.'"

The guy ? whose name was Johnny Weissmuller, and who had just been given the role of Tarzan ? could definitely swim. In fact, "the world's greatest swimmer" was true then, and it's probably still true today. To get a measure of just how good he was, try this single fact for size: in 10 years of competition swimming, Johnny Weissmuller never lost a race. Not once.

No one has ever come close to a winning streak like Weissmuller's, certainly not in swimming. Michael Phelps spent a decade undefeated at 200m butterfly, but lost in other disciplines during that time. Tams Darnyi of Hungary probably came closest, with an eight-year undefeated streak in the brutal 200m and 400m medley events. But Weissmuller raced distances ranging from 50m to half a mile. He swam mostly front crawl, but also set world records for backstroke ("I got bored," he said, "so I swam on my back, where I could spend more time looking around.")

This incredible undefeated period made Weissmuller part of what US sportswriters dubbed "the golden age". The 1920s was a time when America seemed to be producing a string of world-beaters, and Johnny Weissmuller was right up there alongside superstars such as Babe Ruth, Bill Tilden and Jack Dempsey.

Johnny broke world records for fun: at swim meets, in demonstrations, in Olympic finals, at national championships, even in the training pool in front of just his coach, a lifeguard and a cleaner. He got canny about it: his coach had promised to buy him lunch when he broke a record, so Johnny started shaving off a few hundredths here, a tenth there, always making sure there was more in the tank for next time he was hungry.

Officially, by the time he retired Johnny had broken 67 world records. Swimming buffs, though, still repeat rumours that Weissmuller actually set new world marks hundreds of times and just didn't bother to submit the paperwork. He won five Olympic gold medals for swimming, and one bronze, for water polo:

"Water polo's a rough game. We never could beat those Yugoslavians. [The referee] never blows the whistle over there. Anyhow, that's where I learned to duck. It came in handy later, when Cheeta started throwing coconuts."

When he retired from competition swimming, Weissmuller spent time as a beach bum in Florida, then worked as a swimsuit model, touring the country. At 6ft 2 and 86kg, he cut an imposing figure in a pair of budgie smugglers; in retrospect it's not surprising that in 1931, when Hollywood was looking for a new Tarzan, Johnny got a call. He admitted later:

"It was like stealing. There was swimming in it, and I didn't have much to say. How can a guy climb trees, say 'Me Tarzan, you Jane', and make a million?"

Whatever you think of his acting skills, Johnny took to Hollywood like a duck to water. He became such a big star that he didn't have to be a good actor. He made six Tarzan movies with MGM, considered to by your correspondent to be the pinnacle of the genre. He made six more for RKO, which aren't as good. He then swapped pretend Africa for pretend Asia, donned a safari suit and began playing Jungle Jim the hunter. Weissmuller made 13 Jungle Jim films between 1948 and 1954 ? but there's not much swimming in them, and today they're largely unremembered.

By the 1950s, Johnny had made millions in Hollywood. He'd been married four times (with one more wife to come, in 1963), including a tempestuous espousal to the actress Lupe Vlez, "the Mexican Spitfire". That marriage provided gossip columnists with five years of public and private brawling, shouting matches, splitting up and making up, until it ended In 1948. Weissmuller's fame far transcended his swimming achievements, and continues to do so. How many other swimming stars are there on the cover of Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band, after all?

There are many stories about Johnny, but one of my favourites is set against the backdrop of the Cuban revolution. Weissmuller was a strong amateur golfer, and in 1958 he was in Cuba playing in a celebrity tournament. Suddenly, men with guns ? part of the rebel army ? appeared on the course. Things seemed about to get a bit hairy. But Johnny climbed out of his golf cart and gave his trademark yell: "Aaaaaah, ah-ya-ah-ah aaaaaaaah!" "Tarzan!" a voice replied. "Welcome to Cuba!" Hands were shaken, and the rebels escorted the Americans back to the clubhouse.

In 1974, Weissmuller fell and broke his hip and leg. In hospital, doctors discovered he had a lifelong heart condition, which in the coming years finally began to tell on him. In 1977 Johnny had a series of strokes, and in 1984 he died in Acapulco, Mexico. He's buried there, at the Valley of the Light cemetery.

Police launch major London road safety operation after spate of cyclist deaths

Operation Safeway will involve 2,500 officers at 166 junctions around capital throughout period of operation

Hundreds of police have been stationed at road junctions around central London at the start of a major road safety operation launched in the wake of six cyclist deaths in less than two weeks.

Operation Safeway will deploy about 650 police officers at 60 junctions during the morning and evening rush-hours, beginning from Monday morning. The scheme will target all road users in "robustly enforcing the law and educating them about dangers", the Metropolitan police said.

Safeway will involve 2,500 officers throughout its period of operation, with 166 junctions targeted overall.

Run by the Met's traffic unit, the operation will involve officers issuing fixed-penalty notices for breaches of traffic rules, or further action in the event of more serious infractions.

Officers from other parts of the force will "be keeping an eye out for anyone who commits an offence on the road during their day-to-day duties", a police statement added.

The crackdown follows a spate of cyclist deaths in the capital that has focused attention on road safety issues. All but one of the recent cycle deaths involved either a lorry, bus or coach, bringing particular focus on the way cyclists interact with heavy traffic and whether road infrastructure properly protects riders.

Police began a smaller-scale operation last week, which principally targeted lorries and cyclists. There was criticism from some cyclists after they were pulled over to be advised by police that they should be wearing high-visibility jackets or helmets, neither of which is compulsory. Police note that both are recommended in the Highway Code.

Operation Safeway will also involve officers "handing advisory leaflets to those whose behaviour they see is putting them or others at risk of harm on the roads", police said.

Superintendent Rob Revill, leading the operation, said: "This operation will be intensive and far-reaching. Our aim is to reduce the appalling number of people who die or are injured on London's roads each year.

"Every road death is a needless tragedy that wreaks devastation for the victim's friends and family. Every serious injury is life-changing and distressing.

"We are doing this by enforcing traffic legislation robustly and at every opportunity. Traffic and safer transport officers will be out in force, and even officers who don't specialise in traffic policing will be watching and dealing accordingly with anyone they see breaking the law.

"We will also be educating the public at interactive events and talking to anyone we see acting dangerously on or about the roads. We welcome the recent debate around road safety but it is irrefutable that the Met and the public have a duty to ensure that we all take the very best care on the roads."

Some cycling groups criticised the earlier operation for targeting the wrong priorities in advising over helmets and high vis, arguing that not only are their benefits partly unproven, but it sends an implicit message that riders are somehow to blame irrespective of the circumstances of an incident.

London's mayor, Boris Johnson, who with Transport for London is mainly responsible for transport policies in the capital, has also faced criticism for calling for a ban on cyclists wearing headphones.

Critics argue that this is a marginal issue, and he is seeking to distract attention from worries about the bike infrastructure he has introduced, notably the so-called cycle superhighways.

A series of cycle deaths have taken place in and around the superhighways, which despite their name are for the most part marked only by blue paint.

Some cycle groups have instead called for a ban on lorries in central London in the rush-hour, noting that left-turning lorries are responsible for more than half of all cyclist deaths.

Veebot, the Robotic Phlebotomist That Makes Drawing Blood Faster (VIDEO)

There are two things that this editor fears about blood draws: the fact that he has deep veins, and the prospect of being stabbed in the arm by a merciless phlebotomist. Some of those fears could soon be mitigated, thanks to a new robot called Veebot that partially automates blood draws and IV insertions.
Veebot combines the latest in robotics and imaging technology to ultimately speed up the process of drawing blood or inserting IVs. The patient slides his or her arm into an inflatable cuff, which acts as a tourniquet. An infrared light illuminates the inner elbow for a camera that searches for a suitable vein using software that compares the camera’s view against a model of an arm’s veins. Next, ultrasound confirms that the chosen vein has sufficient blood flow for a successf...

Current Treatment of Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction: Should We Add Life to the Remaining Years or Add Years to the Remaining Life?

Authors: Li J, Becher PM, Blankenberg S, Westermann D
Abstract
ACCORDING TO THE EJECTION FRACTION, PATIENTS WITH HEART FAILURE MAY BE DIVIDED INTO TWO DIFFERENT GROUPS: heart failure with preserved or reduced ejection fraction. In recent years, accumulating studies showed that increased mortality and morbidity rates of these two groups are nearly equal. More importantly, despite decline in mortality after treatment in regard to current guideline in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, there are still no trials resulting in improved outcome in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction so far. Thus, novel pathophysiological mechanisms are under development, and other new viewpoints, such as multiple comorbidities resulting in increased non-ca...

Molecule produced during exercise boosts brain health

Research has shown that exercise is good for the brain. Now investigators have identified a molecule called irisin that is produced in the brain during endurance exercise and has neuroprotective effects. Researchers were able to artificially increase the levels of irisin in the blood to activate genes involved in learning and memory. The findings may be useful for designing drugs that utilize this exercise-induced molecule to guard against neurodegenerative diseases and improve cognition.
