What's life like for cyclists on the Tour of Britain route? | Trevor Ward

Record crowds are expected to line the route which starts in Ipswich. Here's the view from local councils and campaigners

Record crowds are expected to line the route of the Tour of Britain which starts in Ipswich on Sunday.

But what's life like for cyclists in the eight towns and cities which will be hosting the stage starts? Here's the view from the local councils, cyclists and campaigners:

Ipswich (Stage One, Sunday 9 September):

The council's Safer Cycling Scheme means cyclists no longer have to use the busy ring road to get from one side of the pedestrianised town centre to the other. They are now allowed to cycle through the pedestrian-only streets before 10:30 and after 16:30. While these times were specifically introduced to encourage commuting to the town centre by bike, they also coincide with the busiest times for vans and lorries loading and unloading.

Nottingham (Stage Two, Monday 10 September)

The city council is in the early stages of an ambitious scheme in which 10 cycle hubs will be set up at transport interchanges around the city. These will offer secure, undercover parking with lockers and CCTV surveillance and only be accessible using the council's Citycard (available for free). Some will eventually offer an electronic cycle hire service, designed to encourage commuters to park their cars outside the city centre and cycle the rest of the way to work.

The city's cycling campaign group, Pedals, meanwhile, is in consultation with Nottingham Express Transit over extensions to the city's tram network. It is concerned about the hazards tram lines pose to cyclists and wants to see alternative back street routes for riders identified.

Jedburgh (Stage three, Tuesday 11 September)

Jedburgh is situated in the heart of the Borders, billed as "Scotland's Leading Cycling Destination". Consequently, most of its cycling infrastructure revolves around providing services, events and routes for recreational and touring cyclists.

"Our cyclists welcome scheme encourages service providers to go the extra mile and is the most inclusive in the country, including not just accommodation and restaurants but bike shops, guides and luggage transfer services," says Neen Kelly of Cycle Scottish Borders .

Carlisle (stage four, Wednesday 12 September)

Campaign group Cycle Carlisle is lobbying the council to allow cyclists access to the city's pedestrianised centre. Ironically, this is where the professional peloton will start Wednesday's stage.

"The only way to get from one side of the centre to the other is along busy, narrow roads used by buses and lorries," says campaigner Aidan Leonard. "Cars and other vehicles can use the pedestrianised zones for deliveries ? and in one case even for parking ? so we should be allowed some access too."

His group recently won a six-year campaign to get cycle parking racks at Carlisle railway station restored to their original position under cover after they were moved outside leaving them unprotected from the weather.

Stoke-on-Trent (stage five, Thursday 13 September)

Stoke won Cycling City status and a grant of 5m from the government in 2008. Since then it has seen the number of regular cyclists double, thanks to an infrastructure than includes more than 30 miles of cycle paths and greenways ? many utilising canal towpaths ? and a cycling safety team that visits schools and workplaces raising awareness and offering advice.

The local council leads by example, providing a secure parking compound for bikes and showers/changing rooms at its city centre offices. One of the regular cycling commuters is cabinet member for economic development, Mark Meredith, who says:

"Part of our success has been down to partnerships with the private sector. Thanks to a partnership with Michelin Tyres, who have their national headquarters here, we were able to provide 3,000 helmets to local schoolchildren."

Welshpool(stage six, Friday 14 September)

Commuting by bike in Welshpool is being actively encouraged by Powys county council with the opening of a new cycle path linking the town to Buttington Business Park. Nearly 1m has been invested on traffic-free paths linking larger towns to outlying communities since the Tour of Britain first visited the area in 2010.

Another recently opened bike path, linking a local primary school to the nearest residential development over a mile away, will be celebrated with a Ride To School on the same day the tour visits.

"It's all part of the Welsh government's plan to provide safer routes for commuters and schoolchildren, and already we are seeing a rise in the number of people cycling or walking to work or school," said Powys county council spokesman John Evans.

Barnstaple (stage seven, 15 September)

The local county council encourages companies to offer a "bike pool", where employees can use bikes for short errands or lunchtime excursions.

Several organisations, including Exeter University and LV Insurance, have taken up the idea, leasing hybrid bikes for 125 a year each from local bike shop Saddles & Paddles who provide maintenance and servicing.

"The employers don't like the risk of owning and maintaining their own bikes, so this is the perfect way for them to encourage staff to get out and cycle. LV have 300 staff and aim to get at least five percent of them using the bikes regularly," says owner Victoria Bamsey.

Reigate (stage eight, 16 September)

Reigate council's official cycling page was last updated in October 2009. This doesn't surprise Adrian Webb, chairman of the area's biggest cycling club, Redhill CC.

"They could definitely do better for local cyclists. I don't think it's a lack of will, more a lack of funds. But they have the luxury of good local cycling clubs who will take up the slack when it comes to encouraging and educating riders," says Webb, who's club has more than 300 active members and has received 117 inquiries since the Olympics.

"We've seen a big step up in the number of bike racks at local stations, the emergence of some new bike lanes and the re-Tarmacing of some roads, but our biggest issues are still potholes, cars parking in bike lanes and driver awareness."

Olympics for the rest of us: How ping-pong can help your brain

The physical benefits of the Olympic sports are pretty obvious: strength, endurance and agility, to name a few. But did you know they also can help the brain? New research shows that any exercise that gets the heart pumping may reduce the risk of dementia and mild cognitive impairment -- and slow those conditions if they start. Aerobic exercise also can boost your mood.

How Memory Affects Decision Making

According to researchers at the The University of Texas at Austin, a person's memory plays a vital role in how new information is processed. The study, published in the journal Neuron, was conducted by Alison Preston, assistant professor of psychology and neurobiology, and Dagmar Zeithamova and April Dominick. The researchers found that human brains relate new information with past experiences in order to gain new knowledge, thus allowing the individual to better understand new concepts and make future decisions... What's life like for cyclists on the Tour of Britain route? | Trevor Ward

Hit 'Em in the Mouth: a glimpse into the frenetic world of bike polo | Laura Laker

The film charts the rise of the sport from the streets of Seattle through the experiences of those who were there from the start

A documentary coming to the UK in October, titled Hit 'Em in the Mouth [HEITM], charts the rise of bike polo from the streets of Seattle through the experiences of those who can say they were there from the start.

HEITM is a glimpse into the paradoxically laid-back and frenetic world of bike polo, offering insight from its pioneers on the beginnings of the sport, including the struggle to find space to play among the city's limited tennis courts, and win a national title while they are at it.

Bike polo started in Seattle in 1998 with cycle couriers like Matt Messenger, aka Messman, playing between jobs. As the couriers moved on to work in bike shops, players later roped in colleagues and friends.

What started off as an excuse to drink, hang out and crash their bikes became something riders took seriously until people started moving to Seattle's "bike mecca" to play.

Over time, bike polo's familiar three-a-side format was established, with players jousting for the ball in the centre of the court to start a game. Dabbing a foot on the ground required the player to ride a 360 circle or tap a board at the side to get back in the game, depending on where they played, until the 360 rule was abandoned in favour of the tap out.

The unwritten rule of "don't be a jerk" was universally agreed on.

What has resulted from years of honing is a thrilling, fast-paced sport with incredible demonstrations of bike handling, spills, some gore, and plenty of irreverent heckling, even from the judge (usually a player from another team). In short, a great spectator sport.

HEITM describes the evolution from "Frankenstein bikes" to polo-specific bikes with short wheel bases. As the film's players learn, bike polo is an increasingly competitive international sport and, with tournaments across the US and Europe, players need to evolve, too.

In late August I met the Hit 'Em in the Mouth star Dustin Rigg playing bike polo on a Hackney basketball court at the end of his European tour. His team, the Seattle Guardians, have just won second place in the London Open bike polo championships. Rigg is described in the film as "a phenomenal player; a great striker able to take advantage of any opponent's mistake". In person he is as laid back as most of the players in the film:

"I don't feel like I helped get [bike polo] started but I helped make it more competitive. Riders are inspired by each other's tricks, which keeps the sport moving forward."

It took Rigg and his fellow players two years of wrangling with Seattle's parks department to get designated court space in the city to play legally. Now, not only is the sport firmly established in Seattle, it has found its place in the world.

? You can see Hit 'Em in the Mouth at the London Bicycle film festival, 4-7 October.

New drug could help maintain long-term weight loss

A new drug could aid in losing weight and keeping it off. The drug increases sensitivity to the hormone leptin, a natural appetite suppressant found in the body. Although so far the new drug has only been tested on mice, the findings have implications for the development of new treatments for obesity in humans.

Long bike rides are also a journey for the mind | James Garvey

Graduating from commuter to cycling tourist involves a weird combination of the mental and the physical

Sailors have a long tradition of hedging their bets. They wouldn't say that they're sailing to somewhere in particular. Instead, they "make for" or "set sail for" their destination ? who knows if they'll make it?

It's in this spirit that I "set off" for John O'Groats this weekend from Land's End by bike. I have almost no idea what I'm doing, so whether or not I arrive at my destination really is anyone's guess.

I started out as a commuter with an entry-level hybrid, but over the past few months I've gone from nearly passing out after a few hours cycling along nice, flat roads by the Thames to nearly passing out at the top of the dreaded Green Monster, Ditchling Beacon, at the end of a long ride from London to Brighton. The learning curve is nose-bleed inducing.

First there's cycling jargon. There's room for high-level innuendo in this world of tubes and rims, but mostly it's simply a matter of misdirection. It turns out, for example, that you need not spend time googling around for illicit, performance enhancing drugs when you read a bike forum comment about the benefits of "cycling on the drops" in windy weather. This is a reference to a certain sort of handlebar. When a man wearing lycra so tight that you can rule out his adherence to a number of religions tells you he's just "jumped a cat", remain calm but focused. He's a racer, and his improved performance means he's moved up into a more demanding racing category.

But the most interesting changes in the transformation from commuter to tourist are a weird combination of the mental and the physical. There's just a lot of head space available on a long ride, and there's not much to think about except the protesting parts of your body.

At first it's just boring. You become entranced by the hypnotic rhythm of your knees. You talk to cows. Your mental reconstructions of the last moments of interestingly configured roadkill become increasingly elaborate.

But as the day wears on and your energy reserves dwindle, there's a strange kind of introspection, the realisation that it's just you and your muscles and a bike and a hill and a question: can you go on a bit more or not? Your world view collapses into a single-minded drive to move your legs up and down, up and down, up and down. Never mind that you might appear to onlookers to be expressing the onset of a coronary, uniquely in medical history, entirely in terms of frenzied rotational motion. Covered in sweat, dehydrated, legs roaring in protest, face locked in a Wallace and Gromit clench of dazed determination, your gentleman's area a distant and painful memory ? you're a physical mess. But it can feel majestic on the inside, a moment of self-mastery and self-understanding, an honest and unalloyed triumph, for once, at the end of a long day in the sun.

It's not too far away from the sorts of things long distance runners go on about. In Running and Being, George Sheehan writes:

"When you see me, that lonely figure out on the road, I am looking for my territory, my self, the person I must be. There I am no longer the observer watching myself think and talk and react. I am not the person others see and meet and even love. There I am whole; I am finally who I am."

Without taking yourself quite so seriously, you can very nearly have a thought like that, on a bike, looking down from the top of Ditchling Beacon.

? James Garvey is riding from John O'Groats to Land's End to raise funds for Shelter from the Storm

Olympics 2012: how to get involved in mountain biking

Mountain biking combines the endurance of the road, the speed of the track and the skill of BMX. What are you waiting for, asks Peter Beech

Introduction

So you want to try mountain biking? Gnarly. Welcome to the cycling world's answer to throwing yourself heedlessly over a cliff. First, you have to get with the lingo, like me. Then you have to get tooled up with the necessary gear. Bikes with suspension are expensive, so mountain biking isn't really for the part-timer, but you should be able to work out from jumping off kerbs with sound effects on your cycle route home whether it's a sport you'd like to try. After that, it's a free country. Note: you shouldn't already have suspension forks on your commuter bike. That's like driving a Chelsea tractor.

The basics

Mountain biking is a broad church comprising the disciplines of cross country (XC), trail riding, all mountain, downhill, freeride, dirt jumping and trials. The first two are the ones most amateurs do first. XC involves following easy-to-moderate routes of rough tracks, bridle paths and the odd tarmac road. It's anything you can handle, really. Ask at your local bike shop for group rides to make things both safe and sociable.

Health benefits

Biking gives you the same hardcore aerobic exercise as a run, but without all those shocks to the ankles, knees and hips. For the same reason, it's a good sport for those returning from injury and can help to improve tendon strength without any load-bearing. Also works wonders for your balance.

Equipment, costs and practicalities

You need a good bike with forks (front and possibly back), a strong, light frame and thick, traction-heavy tyres, and it's probably best to err on the side of upmarket if you're going to take the sport seriously. It's not recommended you pay much less than 500. Avoid buying from the internet until you know exactly what you're looking for ? buying a bike is one of the few activities a salesperson can actually help you with. On top of those you'll need some gloves and a decent helmet. Then you'll need a friend, at least at first. Attacking the trails alone could mean you falling into a gorge and having to hack off your own arm, and unfortunately it's already been done.

So, like, I was totally wondering if you wanted to come with me and the Gnarlster to the top of that hill to ride down that rad 45-degree slope. Hey, come back!

Inside line

Phil Dixon, British Cycling: "Mountain biking brings all the elements of the cycling disciplines together: endurance from the road, speed from the track and skills from the BMX. Being traffic-free, the sport provides a perfect day out for all the family exploring the countryside, and gives a immense sense achievement along with many health and fitness benefits.

"Getting started is simply a case of taking your mountain bike into the local countryside and enjoying Britain's superb network of bridleways (which as a cyclist you can legally use), or visiting one of the UK's purpose-built mountain bike trail centers, with waymarked, hassle-free trails. These are graded from family trails to competition trails, giving a perfect insight to the sport at all levels.

"There is a thriving nationwide MTB club and competition structure - use the events and club finder on the British Cycling website to find out more information."

Gyms are 'no-go zones' for disabled people, say campaigners

Many local facilities are partially inaccessible and will struggle to cope with increased demand in wake of Paralympics

Many of Britain's gyms, leisure centres and swimming pools are "no-go zones" for disabled people and will struggle to cope with an expected surge in interest in fitness activities, following the Paralympic games, campaigners have warned.

A crowdsourced survey of hundreds of gyms across the UK by charity volunteers suggests that many local facilities are partially inaccessible, difficult to navigate and expensive to join. Some did not have specialist gym equipment and nearly half lacked staff trained in disability awareness.

One of the key legacy aims of the Paralympics is to increase participation in sports by Britain's 11 million disabled people. Just 18% of disabled adults undertake physical activity for more than 30 minutes a week, compared with 38% of non-disabled adults, according to Sport England.

The success of the Games has raised hopes of a surge in interest in disability sports participation, but the survey of gyms and leisure centres, carried out on behalf of the charity Leonard Cheshire Disability, found that many facilities are unprepared to capitalise on the potential demand.

The charity said: "Gyms and leisure facilities are a crucial 'first point of entry' to sports and physical activity for most adults. Yet for many disabled people they are 'no-go zones'. Inaccessible changing rooms, steps, poor staff training and lack of usable sports equipment are some of the common barriers that can prevent disabled customers from getting involved."

Guy Parckar, the charity's head of policy, said that while most gyms were "broadly accessible" and complied with disability discrimination laws to fit ramps and lifts, many had failed to get right small but crucial details. These could make all the difference when it came to attracting or retaining disabled customers.

Although most gyms provided disabled parking spaces, for example, the survey found that some bays were not wide enough to enable a wheelchair to be unpacked from a car. Parckar said in many cases, improvements such as installing easy-to-read signs or colour contrast markings on steps, would be relatively inexpensive. It was crucial that gyms sought advice from local disabled people on how to improve access, he added.

The survey of 300 UK leisure facilities found that:

? Nearly a third of gyms did not have an automatic door at the entrance to the gym, while some were fitted with heavy internal doors that were difficult to open. One survey reporter said he watched a wheelchair user forced to open such a door by pushing it with his head.

? Although many gyms had lifts, just over one in five were not working properly. A common problem was that lifts were too small for larger wheelchairs and control buttons were set too high. In one case, it was reported that a lift leading to the gym area of a leisure centre did not appear to have been working for more than a year.

? A quarter of swimming pools did not have hoists to support disabled people to get into the water, while 31% of gyms did not have any fitness equipment that was suitable for disabled people.

The survey, carried out as part of Leonard Cheshire Disability's Exercise Your Right campaign, also highlighted instances where gyms provided excellent services to disabled people. Highly rated gyms were identified as such, not just because they had accessible buildings or equipment but because they practiced good "customer care and management." They also employed staff who were trained to be aware of disabled people's needs.

There is a potentially huge appetite for sport and exercise among disabled people, according to a separate survey of nearly 1,000 disabled people, carried out this week by Leonard Cheshire Disability. It found more than two thirds of respondents said they would like to take part in sport more regularly. Although a quarter said they exercised twice a week or more, a third of those surveyed said they never took part in sport or exercise.

Some 85% of respondents were not members of gyms or leisure centres. Asked why they did not consider joining, more than half said it was too expensive, while 26% said difficulty in accessing facilities put them off

Just under half of respondents said the Paralympics had inspired them to get more involved in sport or exercise, and 26% thought that the Games would encourage more disabled people to take part. But while 89% felt the Games would leave a "positive legacy" overall, just 12% believed it would lead to improved accessibility.

David Stalker, chief executive of the Health and Fitness Industry Association, which represents more than 3,000 UK gyms and leisure centres, said it was concerned at the findings.

Stalker said the association would be continuing its work with charities to get more disabled people active: "We will continue to work with our operator members to go above and beyond the minimum requirements to deliver a user friendly environment for all their customers."
