Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea: A bacterial infection that is transmitted by sexual contact. Gonorrhea is one of the oldest known sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and it is caused by the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria. Men with gonorrhea may have a yellowish discharge from the penis accompanied by itching and burning. More than half of women with gonorrhea do not have any symptoms. If symptoms occur, they may include burning or frequent urination, yellowish vaginal discharge, redness and swelling of the genitals, and a burning or itching of the vaginal area. If untreated, gonorrhea can lead to severe pelvic infections and even sterility. Complications in later life can include inflammation of the heart valves, arthritis, and eye infections. Gonorrhea can also cause eye infections in babies born of infected mothers. Gonorrhea is treated with antibiotics.

Is long-term weight loss possible after menopause?

Studies have found that it is difficult to keep weight off in the long term. For post-menopausal women, natural declines in energy expenditure could make long-term weight loss even more challenging. What's life like for cyclists on the Tour of Britain route? | Trevor Ward

Record crowds are expected to line the route which starts in Ipswich. Here's the view from local councils and campaigners

Record crowds are expected to line the route of the Tour of Britain which starts in Ipswich on Sunday.

But what's life like for cyclists in the eight towns and cities which will be hosting the stage starts? Here's the view from the local councils, cyclists and campaigners:

Ipswich (Stage One, Sunday 9 September):

The council's Safer Cycling Scheme means cyclists no longer have to use the busy ring road to get from one side of the pedestrianised town centre to the other. They are now allowed to cycle through the pedestrian-only streets before 10:30 and after 16:30. While these times were specifically introduced to encourage commuting to the town centre by bike, they also coincide with the busiest times for vans and lorries loading and unloading.

Nottingham (Stage Two, Monday 10 September)

The city council is in the early stages of an ambitious scheme in which 10 cycle hubs will be set up at transport interchanges around the city. These will offer secure, undercover parking with lockers and CCTV surveillance and only be accessible using the council's Citycard (available for free). Some will eventually offer an electronic cycle hire service, designed to encourage commuters to park their cars outside the city centre and cycle the rest of the way to work.

The city's cycling campaign group, Pedals, meanwhile, is in consultation with Nottingham Express Transit over extensions to the city's tram network. It is concerned about the hazards tram lines pose to cyclists and wants to see alternative back street routes for riders identified.

Jedburgh (Stage three, Tuesday 11 September)

Jedburgh is situated in the heart of the Borders, billed as "Scotland's Leading Cycling Destination". Consequently, most of its cycling infrastructure revolves around providing services, events and routes for recreational and touring cyclists.

"Our cyclists welcome scheme encourages service providers to go the extra mile and is the most inclusive in the country, including not just accommodation and restaurants but bike shops, guides and luggage transfer services," says Neen Kelly of Cycle Scottish Borders .

Carlisle (stage four, Wednesday 12 September)

Campaign group Cycle Carlisle is lobbying the council to allow cyclists access to the city's pedestrianised centre. Ironically, this is where the professional peloton will start Wednesday's stage.

"The only way to get from one side of the centre to the other is along busy, narrow roads used by buses and lorries," says campaigner Aidan Leonard. "Cars and other vehicles can use the pedestrianised zones for deliveries ? and in one case even for parking ? so we should be allowed some access too."

His group recently won a six-year campaign to get cycle parking racks at Carlisle railway station restored to their original position under cover after they were moved outside leaving them unprotected from the weather.

Stoke-on-Trent (stage five, Thursday 13 September)

Stoke won Cycling City status and a grant of 5m from the government in 2008. Since then it has seen the number of regular cyclists double, thanks to an infrastructure than includes more than 30 miles of cycle paths and greenways ? many utilising canal towpaths ? and a cycling safety team that visits schools and workplaces raising awareness and offering advice.

The local council leads by example, providing a secure parking compound for bikes and showers/changing rooms at its city centre offices. One of the regular cycling commuters is cabinet member for economic development, Mark Meredith, who says:

"Part of our success has been down to partnerships with the private sector. Thanks to a partnership with Michelin Tyres, who have their national headquarters here, we were able to provide 3,000 helmets to local schoolchildren."

Welshpool(stage six, Friday 14 September)

Commuting by bike in Welshpool is being actively encouraged by Powys county council with the opening of a new cycle path linking the town to Buttington Business Park. Nearly 1m has been invested on traffic-free paths linking larger towns to outlying communities since the Tour of Britain first visited the area in 2010.

Another recently opened bike path, linking a local primary school to the nearest residential development over a mile away, will be celebrated with a Ride To School on the same day the tour visits.

"It's all part of the Welsh government's plan to provide safer routes for commuters and schoolchildren, and already we are seeing a rise in the number of people cycling or walking to work or school," said Powys county council spokesman John Evans.

Barnstaple (stage seven, 15 September)

The local county council encourages companies to offer a "bike pool", where employees can use bikes for short errands or lunchtime excursions.

Several organisations, including Exeter University and LV Insurance, have taken up the idea, leasing hybrid bikes for 125 a year each from local bike shop Saddles & Paddles who provide maintenance and servicing.

"The employers don't like the risk of owning and maintaining their own bikes, so this is the perfect way for them to encourage staff to get out and cycle. LV have 300 staff and aim to get at least five percent of them using the bikes regularly," says owner Victoria Bamsey.

Reigate (stage eight, 16 September)

Reigate council's official cycling page was last updated in October 2009. This doesn't surprise Adrian Webb, chairman of the area's biggest cycling club, Redhill CC.

"They could definitely do better for local cyclists. I don't think it's a lack of will, more a lack of funds. But they have the luxury of good local cycling clubs who will take up the slack when it comes to encouraging and educating riders," says Webb, who's club has more than 300 active members and has received 117 inquiries since the Olympics.

"We've seen a big step up in the number of bike racks at local stations, the emergence of some new bike lanes and the re-Tarmacing of some roads, but our biggest issues are still potholes, cars parking in bike lanes and driver awareness."

Fighting Malaria By Modifying Friendly Bacteria In Mosquito Gut

By genetically modifying gut bacteria in the malaria mosquito, US researchers have found a potentially powerful way to fight malaria. The modified "friendly" bacteria, which live in the midgut of the mosquito alongside the malaria parasite, produce toxins that are deadly to the parasite but do not harm humans or mosquitoes. Writing in a paper published online on 16 July in PNAS, the researchers suggest their findings provide a "foundation for the use of genetically modified symbiotic bacteria as a powerful tool to combat malaria"... On your e-bike: European craze powers into UK

Supporters hope electrically assisted bikes will break down British resistance to cycling and change urban transport forever

At first glance it looks like just another cycle shop, albeit a slightly posh west London one, stocking a mix of sturdy commuter machines, mountain bikes, small-wheeled folding ones, even a tandem. But a closer look reveals the boxy battery packs attached to frames or luggage racks. These are e-bikes, and proponents say they could change urban transport forever.

Electrically assisted bikes, the sort that can be used without a licence or insurance if they stay within certain power and speed restrictions, remain relatively rare in Britain, but elsewhere in Europe they are increasingly big business.

Last year 310,000 e-bikes were sold in Germany, a 55% year-on-year rise. In all more than 700,000 were sold in western Europe. The equivalent figure for electric cars, long touted as the low-carbon transport of the future, was just over 11,500, even with the millions spent on subsidies and on-street charging points.

The UK saw a relatively paltry 20,000 e-bike sales last year, but supporters hope the electric bike could help overcome the longstanding British resistance to cycling as everyday transport. E-bikes, they argue, which provide a smooth but significant extra kick when the pedals are turned, allow people of more or less any age or fitness level to whirr smoothly from place to place, even up steep slopes, arriving unflustered and un-sweaty. This is particularly valuable, they add, in an era of ageing populations.

"You travel faster for less effort ? who can argue with that?" says James FitzGerald, whose Suffolk-based Justebikes company has just opened the west London store, its first in the capital. "They're also safer for city cycling as the added acceleration means e-bike riders can move away from traffic lights more quickly. And in a city they're much more practical than an electric car." E-bikes, also known as electronically power assisted cycles (Epacs) or pedelecs, certainly seem to have a wide demographic appeal compared with regular bikes ? a survey by the British Electric Bicycle Association found more than a third of purchasers were aged 50-59.

While the most common models tend to be commuter bikes, in FitzGerald's shop are folding models and electric mountain bikes, often bought by outdoor enthusiasts with ageing limbs or creaking knees. There is even an electrically assisted bakfiets, the traditional Dutch-style cargo cycle with a container at the front big enough for a couple of children and a weekly shop, the manual versions of which can require iron thighs for the slightest incline.

E-bike technology has moved on considerably from slightly clunky early incarnations. Batteries are lighter and longer-lasting, while the Dutch-made Sparta brand sold by FitzGerald features such gizmos as an electronic speed and power display which doubles as an immobilser - take it off the bike and the motor cannot be used.

FitzGerald says he has held talks with Norman Baker, the Liberal Democrat junior transport minister and semi-official voice of cycling in the government, over ways to increase the take-up for e-bikes, while the Department for Transport says it sees e-bikes as a potentially important part of wider strategies to get people on bikes.

It nonetheless remains uncertain whether they will take off in the UK, with its lack of a wider cycling culture: overall, the percentage of journeys made by bike every year is around 2%, against more than 25% in the Netherlands. The European Cyclists' Federation says Britons are little more likely to ride an e-bike than a normal bike if they feel the lack of dedicated bike lanes and other infrastructure makes it unsafe. E-bikes can also seem expensive to Britons unused to buying good-quality bikes: the well-made Sparta bikes sold by FitzGerald start at around 1,500.

Carlton Reid, editor of the BikeBiz cycle industry website, predicts that such factors will limit the growth of e-bikes in countries like the UK and US.

"There's no sign that e-bike sales in the UK are about to sky rocket," he predicts. "Because of its cycling infrastructure, the Netherlands has a ready market for bicycles and when Dutch cycle shop customers get older they naturally gravitate towards power assistance. Very importantly, the average selling price of a Dutch roadster is far above the average selling price of a standard bike in Britain. And Brits are not used to paying 1,000 for their bikes, so bikes that cost more than this are scary, scary expensive."

What is an e-bike?

The point at which an e-bike becomes an electric moped, and thus subject to all sorts of laws about helmets, insurance and licences, is somewhat complex and covered by a range of EU regulations.

In the simplest terms, an e-bike must weight less than 40kg, have a power output of no more than 200w and must propel you to no more than 25kph, or just over 15mph. Crucially, they must (at least officially) only offer electric assistance, meaning the pedals have to turn for the motor to kick in even if there is a separate throttle.

In practice, put one of the modern machines on the top power setting and it will whizz you from a standing start to 15mph with the barest spin of the pedals. Some e-bikes come with a boost button taking them over 15mph, labelled with an unspoken wink as "off-road use only". This is most likely not legal, the DfT warns. Riders of any e-bike have to be aged over 14.

Some e-bike groups want the power and speed limits increased, but this has met significant resistance from cycling groups worried about such nippy, powerful machines sharing bike lanes with traditional bikes.

Riding-hoods: how to beat the rain | Laura Laker's bike blog

Laura Laker braves a soaking to sample capes that could keep you dry when cycling in the rain

If you are the kind of cyclist not deterred by rain but don't want to reach your destination looking like a human sponge, a few capes on the market ? and some wackier ideas ? offer solutions. But how well do they actually work?

Cleverhood

I couldn't resist introducing myself as Sherlock Holmes while wearing Cleverhood's eponymous cape. Perhaps it's the green-grey tweed print (or plaid), its eccentric triangular shape which I wanted to swoosh dramatically; perhaps it is the effect of peering out from under a visor-tipped hood, zipped up to the chin. A helmet would be worn over the top of the hood, arm holes snap shut magnetically when not in use, and when riding finger loops at the arm holes keep arms covered. With reflective highlights on seams and logo and a handy chest pocket, the Cleverhood also folds up nice and small for handbags (or man bags). With a nice, quality feel, Cleverhood sources materials locally in the US. This was the only one I'd wear off the bike without feeling too self-conscious. Downsides: deploying and releasing hands from finger holes took some practice (tricky for indicating), and my legs did get wet, including lower thighs, in heavier rain.

Cost: $250 (approx 157)

Available from: As a new company with no UK stockists, Cleverhood is offering free shipping in October for UK buyers

Colours: Brown and cream corduroy, grey and white dogtooth and green-grey plaid

Agu Track poncho

The turquoise Agu Track cape I tested had the thickest waterproof material of the three, a little like wearing a paddling pool. With a long bib front and a shorter rear half, when off the bike the cape takes on a slightly odd dimension. Poppers create arm holes in the sides, while straps on the inside keep hands and thighs dry while draping the cape over the handlebars. With reflective detail on the front (including a handy pocket) and back, for fans of the 80s, the cape can also become a bum bag.

Downsides: those preferring to see their steering apparatus may get cold, wet forearms instead, and the inside hand straps can snag on the handlebars. Also the hood doesn't move with the head, even with toggles tightened so my eyes were almost concealed. As a result my indicating arm had to keep the hood at bay as well. Oh, and I was laughed at rather loudly by a builder while wearing it.

Cost: 39.99

Available from (UK stockists): i-ride, cyclechic

Colours: black, red, turquoise, green, with fetching cloud print available from Cyclechic

Madame de P

Stepping out in the aptly named Le Dluge, I felt reassuringly concealed under its voluminous folds, even in a monsoon-like rainstorm. Legs, arms and even hands remain dry, with hand covers (avec thumb holes), while a large, Scottish Widow-style hood keeps faces dry. Drawstrings mean the hood moves with your head, for crucial over-the-shoulder glances. At the risk of a wet face, I preferred to flip the visor up as it came a little too low for seeing clearly on busy roads. Nice touches include a 'gutter' on the hem which directs rain to the back of the coat, so legs don't get dripped on, and curtain weights stop it flapping in the wind, plus a flower holder on the lapel. Downsides: tricky for wearing a helmet, and the coat's size means if the weather changes for the better it needs a sizeable receptacle. It felt stylish and practical, though perhaps it's a little eccentric for some. Le Dluge was the only cape to keep my legs dry.

Cost: 125

Available from (UK stockists): There Cycling and MooiBicycles

Colours: Navy and beige

Uberhood

Turning your bike into Chitty Chitty Bang Bang may be something of a childhood dream, but as an adult adorning your two-wheeled friend with a giant umbrella is to most people foolhardy at best. My local bike shop had a field day when I came in for help to get the thing mounted. 'Possibly the worst idea I've ever seen,' and 'spectacularly s*%@' were two exclamations. The sharp edges on its mounts, seemingly designed for scratching handlebars, were the least of the Uberhood's problems: once open atop the bike (even with additional grippy washer donated by said bike shop) it refused to stay stationery, with thoughts of impalement on my mind. In the rain it blocked my rear view, before suddenly hinging forward 90 degrees like a sail, blocking my forward view and knocking my front light off. Other cyclists left the bike path to overtake me. When down and folded it flopped into the front wheel. Taking the Uberhood down I was happy to face a soaking, and escape with my life.

Cost: $59 + $15 shipping (around 46)

Available from: Uberhood

Colours: red, green, light blue, dark blue

Legislated to health? If people don't take their health into their own hands, governments may use policies to do it for them

Obesity rates in North America are a growing concern for legislators. Expanded waistlines mean rising health-care costs for maladies such as diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. One researcher says that if people do not take measures to get healthy, they may find that governments will throw their weight into administrative measures designed to help us trim the fat.
