FitBark fitness tracker for dogs fetches $30k in first day on Kickstarter

Wearable walkies device aims to help owners ensure their dogs are getting enough exercise

Fitness-tracking devices by companies including Fitbit, Nike and Jawbone are being used by a growing number of humans. Now their dogs can get in on the action too with a device called FitBark.

Pitched as "the world's tiniest wireless activity tracker for dogs", FitBark is a tiny device designed to be attached to a dog's collar, tracking their activity throughout the day, and plotting the results as graphs in a companion smartphone app.

Based on breed, size and age, FitBark will set a daily activity goal for a dog that is "equivalent to approximately one hour of moderately intense physical activity, and the rest of the day spent at a lower energy level".

The New York-based startup behind it is trying to raise $35k on crowdfunding website Kickstarter for the first run of devices, and already has more than $30k of pledges after the first day of its campaign.

"FitBark combines our love for dogs, tech and beautiful design into a product that helps humans better understand dogs and give them back the joy that they provide to us," claims the company's Kickstarter listing.

The device weighs less than 10g, is rugged and water-resistant, and promises up to 10 days of tracking from its Lithium-ion battery before needing to be recharged. The app that goes with it will be available for iPhone and Android smartphones, with data transferred between the devices using Bluetooth technology.

FitBark is selling its first 250 devices for $59 through Kickstarter, although people can pay $109 for a FitBark plus a Base Station for their home, to transmit data to their smartphone when they're not within Bluetooth range of their pet.

FitBark has been in development for 18 months, and this is the startup's second attempt at crowdfunding the product. The first attempt was cancelled in May this year after raising just over $52k of its $100k goal.

"We received tons of feedback on the product, learned about pricing and forged a few great supplier relationships that allowed us to believe we could build an even better FitBark device at a lower price point," explains the company in the new Kickstarter listing.

"We also felt that re-launching would better our chances of making FitBark available to dog lovers everywhere (even across the globe)."

FitBark is also hoping that its device will encourage humans to track their own activity. Its app can receive data from trackers including Fitbit and Nike Fuelband to compare the respective walkies taken by dogs and their owners.

Houston ambulance providers subject to Feds' moratorium

Citing concerns over fraudulent claims, the federal government on Friday placed a six-month moratorium on the enrollment of Houston-area ambulance services providers in Medicare, Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program.

The Texas Tribune reports that the six-month moratorium was issued under a provision in the Affordable Care Act to stifle potential abuse in the Medicare and Medicaid systems. It's the first time such a moratorium was enacted under the new law.

Binge eating with bipolar disorder likely increases psychiatric issues including suicidal thoughts, anxiety

Bipolar disorder evolves differently in patients who also binge eat, a study by Mayo Clinic, the Lindner Center of HOPE and the University of Minnesota found. Binge eating and obesity often are present among bipolar patients, but the mood disorder appears to take a different path in those who binge eat than it does in obese bipolar patients who do not, the researchers discovered. The findings are published online in the Journal of Affective Disorders... (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)

Running blog: how was your weekend running?

Do you use running as a way of exploring a new area, or getting to grips with a holiday destination? And were you one of those who spent the weekend running non-stop for 24 hours - or did you take it a little easier?

This weekend I did a run I've been looking forward to for six months. Usually that would mean a target race, but this one just meant getting my kit on, going out of the front door and not coming back for a good couple of hours - nothing more than the average Sunday long run, basically. The difference was I moved house at the start of the year but somehow hadn't yet done a long run from home in all the time since. As a result, I felt like I'd moved house, but I hadn't really moved in.

Since I started running, it's become a way of orientating myself in the world. Do other runners get this? I don't feel I properly know somewhere until I've run there. Holiday? Better go for a run to suss out the town/beach/bars. Visiting friends for the weekend? I'm just nipping out with my trainers on to see what your life's like. I moved to London about 10 years ago, but it was only when I started running here that, rather than a sprawling mass, it began to feel like the place I lived, a thousand shortcuts and ginnels tying the city to my street.

So, for various reasons - time, illness but mainly plantar fasciitis and an associated collapse in running mojo - I hadn't managed a proper run since I moved. A few lunchtime runs from the office, even a couple of commutes, but nothing that felt like I had run in my new area. Come Sunday morning, six months' buildup felt like a lot of pressure - possibly even more than Catford could stand - but it was great. 14 miles - at least five more than my withered fitness can really cope with - and I now know two new ways to one of my local parks. I know there is an off-road path leading from that park to the southeast side of the brilliant Beckenham Place park, a part I'd never reached before and which turns out to be covered in long, lovely, empty wooded trails. I know a pub I fancy trying out, and I know which streets in Downham are considered best for practising skids on a stolen pizza moped. I know where I want to go next time, how I might try to get there, and when I get to my new front door, after six months and two hours, I finally feel like I'm properly home.

How was your weekend run? I liked (possibly the wrong word) the look of the Thunder Run and the Lakeland 50, but even if it was just an average Sunday, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Let us know below the line.

What Are the Clinical Features of Idiopathic Infantile Nystagmus?

Discussion
Nystagmus is “…an involuntary, periodic eye movement caused by a slow drift of fixation. This drift may be followed by a fast refixation saccade…or a slow movement back to fixation….” The pathological movement is the slow phase, but nystagmus is described by the fast phase (i.e. horizontal nystagmus, vertical nystagmus). Both eyes usually move synchronously. Patients may turn or tilt their heads to improve visual acuity.
Nystagmus is categorized into 3 groupings – physiologic such as gaze evoked, caloric or opto-kinetic nystagmus, acquired such as neurological or ophthalmological diseases, or infantile nystagmus. Infantile is sometimes referred to as congenital because the onset occurs at birth or during infancy.

Bringing care closer to home

Meet Kevin Blake, a long-time patient of Children?s. In the following, his mother, Laurie, describes what having access to Children?s services closer to home has meant to their family.

Kevin and brother David

My son Kevin was born with multiple congenital abnormalities. He has moderate to severe hearing loss, low muscle tone and a handful of developmental delays. When he was born we instantly knew he was a special kid, and I immediately felt very protective of him. Life may be a bit tougher for Kevin, but his vulnerabilities and strength to work through them is nothing short of amazing, and in doing so he inspires my husband Dan and I to be better parents. As Dan says, ?If there are a certain percentage of children born with special needs, then I?m glad we have one of them, be...

Tyler Hamilton: how cycling in Boulder changed my life

Former US pro-cyclist Tyler Hamilton was based in Boulder, Colorado, for 20 years. Living and studying there defined his career, when he moved from skiing to a life on two wheels

Boulder was my US base for the better part of 20 years, and it will always have a special place in my heart. I moved there in 1990, as a student at the University of Colorado, and it was perfect back then. It was a diamond in the rough, and it still is to some extent. The problem with Boulder as a student though, is there's too much to do there beyond studying.

If you like the outdoors, Colorado is a big adventure playground for adults: it's great for skiing, cycling, climbing, and hiking. But there's also lots of fantastic bars and places to eat, and there's a great music scene. A couple of favourite places are Vic's Coffee (2680 Broadway Street at Alpine) ? an awesome place to start the day. Just to the right of it is a great greasy spoon called Marie's Cafe, which won't break the piggy bank; you'll probably save money by eating there.

I discovered Boulder not through cycling but skiing. I was recruited by the university for the ski team, and in my opinion it's the best place for skiing ? you have this super-light, fluffy champagne snow. But in my sophomore year, I had an accident in training and broke two vertebrae in my upper back. I was off the skis for the winter, but my doctor said I could ride a road bike for physical therapy. So, every day after school, I'd go ride my bike.

You can ride year-round there. People think because it's in Colorado, during the winter there's tons of snow and will be impossible to ride your bike, but Boulder is in the Front Range of Colorado, in the foothills of the Rockies, so while the mountains get smothered in snow, Boulder stays pretty dry.

I used to go on these crazy long rides. One of the best is the Peak to Peak Highway north of Boulder ? they say it's a highway, but it's a rolling road that undulates from probably 2,286m all the way up to 3,000m over 55 miles. It's the most beautiful ride with breathtaking views of the mountains. When you look to the west you see the Continental Divide ? a spectacular range that runs from Canada, through the US down to Mexico. Rain and snow that lands on the east of the Divide goes to the Mississippi river and the Atlantic Ocean; anything to the west goes to the Pacific, so it's pretty cool.

Most people don't feel like riding 900m to get to the most beautiful part of the ride, so just drive up to Nederland, where I bought my first home in 1995. It's about 15 miles up a windy, twisting canyon, and the town stands at 2,500m on the Peak to Peak Highway. This can be the start and finish of your ride. Have breakfast at the Whistler Cafe (121 North Jefferson Street, Nederland) ? go for the mountain muffin ? and then set off north on your ride. Your first rest stop will be a small town called Ward at 2,880m ? population around 150 people and one little country store ? it's a quirky town but I love it. If they could be their own little republic, I think they would. These sorts of places make you feel like you're still in the wild west.

I'd never really experienced the west before moving to Colorado. The east coast, where I grew up, has a lot of big cities, like Boston and New York, and is more densely populated, and I instantly fell in love with the big open spaces of the west, where you can see not just for a few miles but for a few hundred miles. Once I'd experienced it, it felt like something I'd been missing. I don't think I'll ever move back east.

I had no idea that Boulder was a huge cycling destination. But there I was riding in this big country and I just loved it. Before I knew it I was running into a lot of good bike racers. People such as Andy Hampsten [winner of the 1988 Giro d'Italia], who was later my team-mate; Davis Phinney; and Bobby Stuckey, who now co-owns Frasca, one of the best restaurants in Boulder. It was just amazing and I still look back and think, wow, I was really lucky to learn from these guys. If I hadn't gone to university in Boulder, I would never have been a professional cyclist.

What about the others?

I had a blog in mind for today that affects us all, but it will have to wait. Tonight there is something much more personal on my mind.I spent the afternoon at the pediatrician with Sarah. This has been a tough year emotionally for me when it comes to my baby girl, but I don't let her know my concerns. It was tough when she turned six because that was the age Daniel was at diagnosis. Then she had four rounds of strep in as many months. This worried me because they say that autoimmune diseases are triggered by illness. Then a couple of weeks ago she started wetting the bed and going to the bathroom more and more. I tried to ignore it. Can you believe that? I did not want to know what was causing it. Yesterday I received a note from her teacher that she is going to the bathroom a lot, someti...

Proteomic analysis and molecular modelling characterize the iron-regulatory protein haemojuvelin/repulsive guidance molecule c.

Authors: Nili M, David L, Elferich J, Shinde U, Rotwein P
Abstract
HJV (haemojuvelin) plays a key role in iron metabolism in mammals by regulating expression of the liver-derived hormone hepcidin, which controls systemic iron uptake and release. Mutations in HJV cause juvenile haemochromatosis, a rapidly progressing iron overload disorder in humans. HJV, also known as RGMc (repulsive guidance molecule c), is a member of the three-protein RGM family. RGMs are GPI (glycosylphosphatidylinositol)-linked glycoproteins that share ~50% amino acid identity and several structural motifs, including the presence of 14 cysteine residues in analogous locations. Unlike RGMa and RGMb, HJV/RGMc is composed of both single-chain and two-chain isoforms. To date there is no structural information for ...

Wild swimming itself isn't dangerous, but our behaviour around water can be | Daniel Start

The heatwave has seen many drownings, but the more experience our children have of open waters, the safer they'll be

Wild swimming ? taking a dip in rivers, lakes, waterfalls and streams ? is fantastic fun, has great health benefits and thousands of people have been giving it a go over the last few weeks. But as cooling off during the heatwave has led to a series of avoidable drownings and the as yet unexplained death of Channel swimmer Susan Taylor, people are rightly asking: is wild swimming safe?

Having just written a wild swimming book about the most beautiful locations to swim in Britain, I too have asked myself, are any of these places dangerous? One of the locations that I have always loved is Gullet Quarry in Worcestershire, a superbly beautiful spring-fed pool in a natural amphitheatre that reaches more than 18C in summer. Yet there have been two drownings of local boys there this month. The water is warmer than the sea, there are no currents and no particular underwater obstructions. Indeed, there is a community of open-water swimmers who swim there all year round because it is considered a safer place to swim than the sea, or the nearby River Severn. Yet the location also has steep cliffs and attracts young lads on hot weekends who tempt each other, often after a few beers, to jump from higher and higher ledges.

But does this mean that wild swimming is inherently dangerous? I believe that it is behaviours and activities around swimming that are dangerous, rather than any specific location. The official drowning statistics make for sombre reading but you might be surprised to learn that outdoor swimming is rated as a moderate risk, while other seemingly benign activities, such as canoeing, fishing and sailing, are high risk. When you break down the data further, more than 90% of outdoor swimming-related drownings are young males, often weak or non-swimmers, who have consumed alcohol.

The key advice I give to beginners about swimming safety is know your limits and build up experience slowly. Water can be chilly, even in summer, and though cold water itself does not kill (you could survive a good 24 hours if dropped in the North Sea in November on hypothermia grounds alone), cold water does make you much less buoyant. Work on the principle of being able to swim 10% of the distance you can do in the pool until you have built up your cold adaptation with short swims and dips. Above all, stay close to the bank or shore. In rare incidences, very cold water (we are talking winter conditions) can also cause cold shock and hyperventilation, so enter slowly and be careful jumping into deep water that might have very cold water in layers below.

In our increasingly indoor and urban society, we are losing basic outdoor skills and common sense. Half of primary school children over the age of seven cannot swim a length of a pool, and far fewer will have had an experience of swimming outdoors. Even the National Trust now recommends wild swimming for children, as one of the ways to ward off "nature deficit disorder".

So, no, I don't believe that fencing up wild swimming locations will improve safety. Instead, I want to see more inland swimming places created, such as on the continent, where almost every reservoir has its beaches, most without lifeguards, as people are trusted to be able to look after themselves. I'd like to see schools include outdoor swimming in their PE lessons, families going wild swimming together, and more water companies across the country following the example of Rutland Water and creating designated seasonal swimming beaches. The Lea Valley lakes in north London are a prime candidate. These are beautiful, clean, safe lakes near the heart of the city, and could provide health and leisure benefits to many.

We need to change our attitude to inland waters and encourage a whole new generation to get outdoors, swim in nature, and build a love of wild places that will serve them their whole lives.

? This article was amended on 18 July 2013. It originally located Gullet Quarry in Gloucestershire, rather than Worcestershire. This has now been corrected.

Children?s celebrate new satellite location on North Shore

To better serve families living on the North Shore, Children?s Hospital Boston recently opened a new 40,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art specialty care center in Peabody called Boston Children?s North.
In addition to expanding the Cardiology, Neurology and Developmental Medicine services, Boston Children’s North offers a number of new services not previously available at our old facility: phlebotomy, EEG, urology testing and an Allergy Clinic. Four new imaging services have also been added: MRI, Diagnostic, Ultrasound and Fluoroscopy.

Even though Boston Children’s North has been open for over a month, it wouldn’t be a grand opening without our staff, patients and their families. On Saturday, March 12, from 1 to 3 p.m., Boston Children’s North will host an aft...

Dosing of Renal Replacement Therapy in Acute Kidney Injury: Lessons Learned From Clinical Trials

Prescribing dialysis to manage acute kidney injury (AKI) is common and recently has become a controversial area for physicians. The concept of dialysis ?dose? initially was developed for end-stage renal disease and has been extended to AKI in the last decade. Urea kinetic modeling has been the mainstay of dose quantification in end-stage renal disease. Extrapolation of these techniques to critically ill patients with AKI is difficult because of a non?steady state leading to a variable increase in urea generation rate, alterations in total-body water and its compartmental distribution, and changing renal excretory capacity. Additional challenges are imposed when dose is considered for different modalities of dialysis that vary in operational characteristics (diffusion, convection, and...

Scared Dental Patients Explained

The American Association of Endodontists recently reported results from a survey about dental fear. About 80% of adults fear the dentist in the US. This sounds crazy, but the survey shows that adults fear a root canal almost as much as flying in an airplane during a storm! Just over 40% fear a root canal more than a job interview or public speaking. Why are these folks so darned afraid of the dentist?
Root Canal Number-One Feared Procedure
The primary cause for dental phobia is fear of pain, and a root canal is the most feared procedure. In regards to root canals, about a third of respondents base their fears on stories they?ve heard from other people, not from their own experience. Funny thing is, the AAE says that most root canal patients consider their procedure positive. And just so ...
