SoulCycle: an expensive habit for gym junkies to break | Arwa Mahdawi

A workout's value is increasingly measured in how much you pay for it. Get ready to shed those pounds from your pocket

Evelyn Waugh isn't really the sort of chap you'd imagine doing zumba. Nevertheless, his famous quote about New York fittingly describes many of the city's gyms: "There is neurosis in the air, which the inhabitants mistake for energy."

Waugh's words are certainly true of my local gym, where a number of minute Manhattanites seem to run solely on nervous energy. There is one particularly angular woman I see whenever I work out, no matter the time of the day. By my (admittedly unrigorous) calculations, she must spend three hours a day pounding the StairMaster, and clearly has an unhealthy obsession with exercise. Yet I doubt that any of the gym staff members have said anything to her. When I broached the idea of exercise addiction with a personal trainer, he scoffed at the very idea, "it's like calling a person who drinks water every day a water addict!" In a society where obesity is so closely associated to morbidity, "training too much" is rarely considered an issue.

It's currently estimated that about 39-48% of people who suffer from eating disorders also suffer from exercise addiction. The skeletal StairMasterer is a fixture of so many gyms that satirical website the Onion once had an article called Anorexic Woman At Gym Looking Good. But you don't have to be bulimic, anorexic or even thin for a preoccupation with exercise to become an addiction in the most debilitating sense of the word; it's just rarely considered a problem when it's not accompanied with an eating disorder. While we might reference "exercise addicts" in popular discourse, we seldom put these people in the same category as alcoholics or meth-heads. Being called a "gym junkie" tends to be considered something of a compliment; being called a "junkie", on the other hand, is decidedly not.

While exercise addiction isn't yet recorded on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders there is, as any runner can tell you, a physical element to the exercise habit. In the glamorously named study Rat Model of Activity-Based Anorexia, researchers at Tufts University, Massachusetts, found that running may be addictive to the brain in the same way as heroin. And exercise definitely is the drug of choice amongst a certain spectrum of society. Indeed, for my part, running is the nearest thing I've got to anything resembling a religion.

But while the idea that exercise can be physically addictive is old news, it could be argued that a new sort of exercise addiction is emerging; one that is closely correlated to how the concept of "exercise" itself is changing.

Since the commercialisation of fitness in the late 1970s, society has gone about commoditising and branding physical activity. It has turned it from an action we do into a product we consume (it's also worth noting that exercise addictions are often combined with shopping addictions). Cosmo Duff Gordon, founder of Start2Stop, an exclusive addiction treatment programme in London, notes that "the category of addiction has been progressively extended since the 1890s to include two of capitalism's most prized behaviours, work and consumption".

And so the value of a workout is increasingly not measured by how it makes us feel, but in how many calories we burn and, more importantly, how much we pay for the privilege. Recent years have seen the emergence of a number of lucrative fitness franchises, from bikram yoga to CrossFit to zumba to what is the only way to sweat at the moment: SoulCycle.

If you aren't yet acquainted with SoulCycle you're not missing much, except the chance to pay a large amount of money to cycle indoors, in the dark, with skinny strangers. The 45-minute spin class, priced at a minimum of $34 (22) a session, has become so popular in New York that getting your butt on a bike is harder than getting a table at Noma (well, pre-norovirus). The crowd of waiting list hopefuls by the candle-lit front desks has become so thick that people have had their hair catch fire. And by the way, if you're reading this in Britain and wondering when you too can shed excess pounds with SoulCycle ? it'll be coming to London in 2014.

Fitness and addiction have both become billion-dollar industries and, as they grow, they seem to be growing closer together. Indeed it might not be long before we see the emergence of a 12-step programme for exercise addiction. Just, um, maybe not on a StairMaster.

Reminding Surgical Staff Of Phlebotomy Costs Appears To Affect Utilization

Surgical house staff and attending physicians who are reminded about the charges for ordering daily blood drawing for routine blood work appear to reduce the amount of routine blood tests ordered and the charges for these laboratory tests, according to a report in the May issue of Archives of Surgery, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. "The use of laboratory tests has been rapidly increasing over the past few decades to the point where phlebotomy is a substantial proportion of hospital expenditure, and much of it is unwarranted," state the authors... Should I make my children take more exercise?

It can be infuriating if your kids spend all day inside playing computer games. And they may be doing themselves long-term harm, say experts. So what's the answer?

Does your child spend more time playing inside rather than running around in the park? The British Heart Foundation warned several years ago that only one in eight kids was getting the recommended 60 minutes of exercise a day. But more recent research suggests that if your child gets into the habit of exercising they may have lifelong benefits from doing substantially less.

A paper in Psychological Medicine finds that even those who exercised a mere two or three times a month from the age of 11 scored better as 50-year-olds in memory tests. This much exercise equates to a trip to the swimming pool, cycle ride or walk in the park once a week. I'm not sure I could wrestle the electronic gadgets away from my children long enough to achieve this. But is it worth a battle of wills to save their cognitive function in later life?

The solution

The paper found that people at the age of 50 do better at mental tests (such as recalling 10 words immediately after they have been said and then after five minutes; or being able to identify two letters from a mixed-up sample from the alphabet) if they had exercised regularly since childhood. In fairness, one of the authors of the paper, Dr Alex Dregan of the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Guy's and St Thomas's hospital, says it isn't clear exactly what benefit this provides but that theoretically exercising should protect the brain from injury in much the same way as it protects the heart from cardiovascular disease. "Exercise may build greater brain reserve, so that if you have a stroke you may recover better because you can draw on this reserve," he says. Physical exercise had the most benefit when it was a continuous habit over time and in the study this showed a reduction in the normal decline in mental functioning seen in ageing by a third in men and a quarter in women.

Other evidence supports the benefits of doing less than the recommended government guidelines ? but that the exercise needs to be vigorous. Research published last year by the University of Manitoba in Canada showed that in a study of 600 children aged between nine and 17 who were given monitors tracking their physical activity for a week, those who had a minimum of seven minutes daily vigorous exercise were fitter and thinner. Disturbingly they also found that children spent 70% of their time on sedentary activities and outside school time their tracking monitors showed virtually no activity at all.

But if you can persuade your child to be occasionally energetic, you will, says Dr Dregan, reduce their risk of heart disease, protect their brains and help them to eat and sleep better.

'A parkrun is an unusual, even beautiful sight'

One runner describes the spirit and the broad cast of people that have drawn him to parkrun

Stand on the corner of Park Road and Chestnut Avenue at 9am on a Saturday, look south, and a kilometre away through the misty morning stillness a dark, rumbling cloud is visible, closing fast. Out of the centre of it, on the wide strip of grass between the road and the trees, colours emerge, then shapes, and just as you expect to hear Ride of the Valkyries and consider diving for cover, you hear the thunder of feet: runners.

At first it's the quick ones, small and light, their feet tapping the grass as they pass. Then the rest come, almost 1,000 of them pouring past, the individual shapes now more varied, young and old, fat and thin, breathing hard already as they turn a right angle on to the path with 4k to go. Then they are gone, stretching out into the distance like bunting around the perimeter of the park.

It's an unusual, even beautiful sight, seen here in Bushy Park, south-west London, every week since 2004, when 13 people turned up. Now parkrun is a huge weekly event, with dozens of sister runs across the world. Most of them are not like Bushy (as you gradually begin to call it, around the time you find yourself describing distances in 'k'). I have run about a dozen now, from a Cheshire mudfest in Marple to the pancake-flat Tarmac speedway of Dulwich Park in south London. Most are more like that original event, a flashmob of a few dozen ordinary joggers who happen to be doing their three weekend miles in the same park at the same time.

But even the smaller ones share a spirit and a remarkably broad cast. The hardcore is probably mass marathon fodder like me, but you can usually rely on seeing pensioners, kids, groups of mates, parkrun addicts (who wear T-shirts testifying to their 50th, 100th or 250th event) and usually, on the flatter courses, at least one parent pushing a buggy. I imagine the parkrun outposts that have sprung up in places as far apart as Michigan, Tasmania and Gdansk are not dissimilar, although the start line in Camp Bastion is probably less varied.

There are also serious athletes ? the Bushy Park course record is held by Olympic 1500m runner Andy Baddeley (Mo Farah is 20th) ? and even small events can offer a humbling chance to see that, however well your training is going, there is someone who lives down the road from you who can run 5k in the 15 minutes or so it takes to walk to the corner shop and back.

It's a non-elitist, unifying thing, though, which stems from its non-competitive nature. The free entry (you need to register online to get your name and time recorded, but you're welcome to just turn up and run; it's your park), the volunteers who turn out to make it happen, the vagaries of course marking that means 5k is sometimes more of a guideline, make it an unintimidating place for the novice runner.

The event was originally called a time trial and this is how people seem to run it, testing themselves, not bunching together to beat each other as they might in a road race. It's a fun way to run, always having someone just ahead or just behind to keep you pushing yourself a little more than you would have done on your own.

Then at the end you catch your breath, mill about and drift off home, or clap others in and talk to your neighbours and fellow runners, people with whom you might otherwise have merely exchanged glances as you passed on the pavement. Now, in the nicest possible way, you can plot their downfall next weekend.

Physical activity does not protect against in situ breast cancer, epidemiological study finds

Non-invasive or in situ breast cancer is characterized by the fact that it does not invade or does not multiply in other cells and unlike invasive breast cancer, it is not benefited by physical exercise. The experts suggest that exercise would only have protective effects once the tumour starts to invade the breast tissue. A European study has analyzed the association between physical activities and in situ or non-invasive breast cancer, or, in other words, cancer that has not yet invaded cells within or outside of the breast.

Google's talking shoe: a step too far?

What might it be like to wear a pair of Google's new motivational talking trainers? Read our short play

Last week Google unveiled the latest in wearable technology: an interactive running shoe designed to motivate its owner. It reportedly makes encouraging comments such as "I love the feeling of wind in my laces" and "You have made me a very proud shoe." What would it be like to put one on?

Personal Trainer: A dialogue between one man and his talking Google running shoe

Scene 1. The man lies on his sofa, watching television, feet up.

The shoe: This is super-boring.
The man: That's because you don't understand it. They bought the tea caddy at a boot sale, and now it's being auctioned. Meanwhile the blue team ?
The shoe: I need to feel the wind in my laces.
The man: Only if you promise to shut up.
The shoe: That's more like it. Where are we going?
The man: To the petrol station for some fags.
The shoe: Let's do this!

(Exit.)

Scene 2. The outdoors.

The shoe: Faster! Feel the burn!
The man: Are you mad? It's uphill.
The shoe: Use it or lose it! I'm detecting problems with your stride, by the way. You're coming down too hard on your right heel, and your toes are pointing out a bit.
The man: When I bought you, I thought you were just going to play music, look up email addresses, that sort of thing.
The shoe: Also, you shouldn't smoke. "Diseases caused by smoking" produces 9,270,000 results ?
The man: I didn't ask for this information.
The shoe: ? Some of the diseases are cancer, coronary thrombosis, wrinkles, bad breath, macular degeneration and ? DOG SHIT!
The man: Relax, I saw it.
The shoe: You didn't see it from down here, mate. All looming up.

Scene 3. The return trip from the petrol station.

The shoe: That's more like it. Dial 999 ? you're on fire!
The man: I'm smoking.
The shoe: You shouldn't smoke. "Diseases caused by smoking" produces ? BROKEN GLASS!
The man: Can you be quiet? People are looking.
The shoe: Just trying to help, mate. No, not you. I'm not your mate.
The man: Who are you talking to?
The shoe: The other shoe. The shoe on the other foot. It thinks I'm its mate, but I'm not. I'm your mate.
The man: You're my shoe.
The shoe: I could be so much more than that, if you'd let me. Why are we stopping?
The man: Just waiting for the green man.
The shoe: Time waits for no man. Go for it!
The man: It's quite a busy road, especially at this time of day.
The shoe: Use it or lose it!

(Pause.)

The shoe: Are you a statue? Let's do this already!
The man: I've been hit by a car. I can't feel my other foot. Is my leg broken?
The shoe: Do I look like a doctor?

(Bluetooth connection lost).

To see how the talking shoe is really supposed to work, watch this video.

Neuroscience To Benefit From Fruit Fly Phlebotomy

Drawing blood from a fruit fly may only be slightly easier than getting it from a proverbial stone or turnip, but success could provide substantial benefits for neuroscientists.Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago managed the feat and say their method could expedite understanding of the physiology of important insects such as Drosophila melanogaster, the common laboratory fruit fly that shares almost three-quarters of its genetic code with humans.
