The most famous courts are "The Cage", aka West 4th Street Courts in Greenwich Village, New York; Holcombe Rucker Park in Harlem, NY; and Venice Beach in Los Angeles. Talented streetballers are snapped up by NBA scouts, so you could be watching the stars of the future.

The BMX centre at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester (nationalcyclingcentre.com) is one of the biggest in the world and the GB team's base. But as long as you register as a member of the centre, anyone can ride the track at a beginners' open session. The Birmingham BMX Track (birminghambmxclub.com) hosted the UCI BMX World Championships in May, and also runs open sessions for the public and coached sessions for beginners. Olympic athletes train at the Burnham-on-Sea track in Somerset (ultimatebmx.co.uk), but it is open to everyone on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Rampworx in Liverpool (rampworx.com) is the UK's biggest indoor skatepark, and it runs some BMX-only sessions.

Or head to Ponte Brolla in Switzerland next month to watch the World High Diving Federation's Cliff Diving European Championship (20-21 July, whdf.com). Or even to Mexico to watch the famous La Quebrada cliff divers plunge 35 metres (125ft) into the sea in Acapulco. Prefer to do it yourself? The centrepiece for London 2012's track cycling events, Lee Valley VeloPark (visitleevalley.org.uk), will be open to the public from the end of the 2013 and will run taster courses. The velodrome at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester (nationalcyclingcentre.com) runs one-hour sample sessions. Herne Hill Velodrome in South London (hernehillvelodrome.com) is good for beginners as its sides are less steeply banked, and it runs inductions and women-only training sessions. At Reading Velodrome (readingvelodromeracing.co.uk), beginners can hire bikes for 5 on Thursday evenings.
Trampolining is surely due for a trendy makeover a la table tennis, but for now, bars with trampolines are thin on the ground. Perhaps that's for the best. But if you want to emulate top trampolinists ? without the benefit of their acrobatic ability and years of training ? head to Brighton, Bournemouth or Weymouth. Jumpzone's bungy trampolines (jumpzone.org) on the seafront allow you to reach heights and perform tricks that would be impossible on a normal trampoline. With a harness, some poles and a few bungy cords, anyone can bounce like an Olympian.

Vast majority of people surveyed by ComRes said they were not 'inspired to play more sport at the moment because of Olympics'
New research has shown the scale of the challenge facing the government and London 2012 organisers to meet their promise to "inspire a generation" to play more sport, with eight in 10 people saying the Games have not yet had an effect on their exercise habits.
The ComRes findings accompany a new joint report by the independent Sports Think Tank and theology thinktank Theos, which claims that "no recent Olympic Games has produced proven economic benefits to the host country or city".
On Friday, the culture secretary, Jeremy Hunt, insisted the government would not walk away from promises made when London won the right to host the Games that it would inspire more people to play more sport.
While accepting that it was "a big challenge", he said that 1bn invested over five years through Sport England would help boost participation figures, particularly among the young. New figures show that while participation rates for those over 26 have risen in the past year, among under 25-year-olds they continue to fall.
The government has also claimed that the Games will boost tourism numbers by 4 million and result in a 1bn boost for inward investment.
Only 4% of those surveyed said they agreed strongly with the statement: "I'm inspired to play more sport at the moment because of the London 2012 Olympics", while 80% disagreed or disagreed strongly.
Sports minister Hugh Robertson and the London 2012 chairman, Lord Coe, have said it is unfair to judge the legacy effect of the Games before they have even taken place.
The government was last year forced to drop a target set by the previous Labour administration that promised to get a million more people playing more sport by 2013. Figures released on Friday showed that 500,000 had been added to the numbers.
The report, Give Us Our Ball Back: Reclaiming Sport for the Common Good, says too many claims are made on behalf of sport and that it should be considered a worthwhile investment in itself.
"Releasing sport from the demands of public utility will allow it to occupy its rightful place in society ? that of contributing to a full, happy and meaningful life," it concludes.
"External benefits will naturally come from playing, watching and engaging in sport, but should be seen primarily as byproducts of something with specific worth already."
Andy Reed, the former MP who is co-director of the Sports Think Tank and chair of the Sports and Recreation Alliance, said: "Those of us who love sport need to remember to be cautious about placing unrealistic political, economic and social demands on it and relearn how to value it for its own sake."
The survey also showed that 64% of the public believe taxpayers have contributed too much to the cost of the Games, with the figure rising to 70% in London, where a proportion of the council tax has also been put towards the 9.3bn cost of staging the Games.
Earlier this month, the government said there would be at least 400m in contingency remaining from the 9.3bn public funding package for the Games, which paid for the venues, security, and other costs. The London organising committee (Locog) privately raised the 2bn it costs to stage the Games from sponsorship and ticketing income.

Colic: A cause of crampy abdominal pain in early infancy. Colic is a common condition, occurring in about 1 in 10 babies. An infant with colic is irritable, cries, and often has a rigid abdomen and draws up its legs. Overfeeding, undiluted juices, food allergies, and stress can aggravate colic. Colic usually lasts from early infancy to the third or fourth month of age. Treatment can include dietary changes, carefully measured feedings, and extra burping. Parents should not assume that new abdominal pain and loud crying in their baby are colic. It is important for the baby to be seen by a physician to rule out more serious conditions.

HIT, high-intensity interval training, is a new fitness fad, but can the possibility of less pain (and time) really equal more gain?
If you are one of the 62% of men or 72% of women in the UK who are yet to meet the government's recommended 150 minutes of exercise a week, you'll be pleased to hear new research suggests you may not have to. Fitness has seen a shift towards short but intense workouts, a training concept known as high-intensity interval training, or HIT.
"HIT simply involves alternating high- and low-intensity efforts," says Professor Martin Gibala from the department of kinesiology at McMaster University in Canada. Research has shown a wealth of positive results from the ever-increasing number of studies on HIT: in terms of performance and physiological measures, including aerobic capacity, carbohydrate metabolism and insulin sensitivity. This could make it as useful to an overweight diabetic as it is to someone training for their first 10k run.
Gibala first examined the effects of short blasts of effort on fitness in 2005. His subjects, who were active people but not athletes, cycled against high resistance on an exercise bike for 30-second bursts. Each effort was interspersed with four-minutes rest, or easy pedalling, and repeated four to six times, three days a week. Within two weeks, the subjects had doubled the amount of time they could cycle at a pre-set intensity, from 26 to 51 minutes.
But wouldn't a less extreme method of exercise, such as leisurely jogging, offer equal benefits? "If we assess the effect of six weeks of HIT compared with as much as 20 weeks of traditional endurance training, the percentage gain in aerobic capacity is within the exact same range." says Professor Jamie Timmons, chair of ageing biology at the University of Birmingham.
Research at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh found that after only two weeks of HIT, sedentary men experienced reductions in both glucose and insulin levels. "Typically, endurance training in this population would have a limited impact on glucose, only reduce insulin somewhat and usually not until after many weeks of training," says Timmons. "HIT training addresses two of the major health benefits of exercise, insulin sensitivity and aerobic capacity, while simultaneously removing the time barrier to exercise."
With lack of time often cited as a reason for not exercising, it is certainly appealing that you can complete your exercise regime in less time than your post-workout shower. But Professor Paddy Ekkekakis, from the department of health and human performance at Iowa State University, says there is no evidence to suggests this means a greater adherence: "While non-exercisers frequently bring up lack of time as the main reason for not exercising, there is no indication this is true," he says. Nor, says Ekkekakis, is there any scientific support for the idea that the short-lived discomfort of high-intensity exercise is an acceptable payoff for the time it frees up. There is also concern that for the totally inactive, HIT training is likely to be too uncomfortable ? or even dangerous.
It was this that prompted Gibala to assess the effects of a modified form of HIT involving 10 one-minute efforts with one-minute recoveries. "We kept total training time low, decreased the intensity of the intervals but increased their duration and lowered the recovery period," he explains. "After just six sessions, the changes we observed both from muscle biopsy and exercise performance were comparable to what we had seen after two weeks of all-out training," says Gibala.
Mind you, three sessions of 30 minutes a week is a far cry from the allure of three minutes a day, and sounds a lot like the type of interval session that many keen exercisers already do. For someone who is already active does HIT present a way to gain further performance gains? "For those already doing sprint training and weights as part of their regime, HIT won't add that much," says Timmons. "But if your training is all sub-maximal, then HIT could improve insulin sensitivity and promote muscle mass gain."
It may also improve your PBs. A 2009 study in the Journal of Applied Physiology looked at what happened when runners reduced their usual volume of training by 25% and introduced six to 12 30-second sprints, three to four times a week for six to nine weeks. Performance in a 30-second sprint test improved by 7% and 10k race time was bettered by a minute.
The promise of more for less for every exerciser, however reluctant, suggests this is unlikely to be another passing fitness fad.

Emma Kennedy always suspected she had a hidden talent for archery ? and then she scored a bullseye with her first arrow in Sherwood Forest
I've always wondered if I might be amazing at something I've never tried. Golf is something I have a deep suspicion I may have an untapped natural propensity for. I have no idea of knowing this because I've studiously avoided finding out. I'm terrified I'll love it and start wearing check trousers and flat caps and spending a third of my yearly income on a cart bag made of cashmere.
I have form on suddenly finding out I'm quite good at niche sports. I once discovered I was phenomenal at conkers and ended up being the runner-up in the World Conker Championships. I would have been the champ but I was let down in the final by a soft nut. Thankfully, conkers doesn't come with swanky kit so each year, all I have to do is wander round my local park, hang around under horse chestnut trees, then buy a ball of string. That's it.
I have a terrible weakness for kit. Woeful. The merest sniff of a passing interest and I'll have bought every single thing I can ever need, use it for a month and then consign the lot to the basement. I once bought a saxophone, learned how to play the American national anthem, took it apart and never blew into it again. Sports that come with expensive kit are dangerous and so it is with a certain amount of dread that I find myself heading to deepest Nottinghamshire to have a go at archery.
I'm going to be joined by a pal, Danielle. I've told her we're going to a place in Sherwood Forest called Adrenalin Jungle where, aside from the archery, you can also have a go at thrilling things such as blindfold driving and extreme paintballing. Danielle has become rather fixated with the blindfold driving and has been trying to persuade me for a month to do it. She can dream on.
All the same, I'm keeping my cards close to my chest. I'm springing the archery truth bomb on her when she arrives, which was a good idea until I get a call from a fractious Danielle telling me her satnav has stopped working. She's been driving for four hours from the toe of Kent and, I'll be honest, she's not in the best of moods.
"Archery?" she says, in her trademark American drawl. "ARCHERY? You've made me drive for four hours to have a go on a bow and arrow?"
"They might also let us ride a Segway," I offer. "It'll be fine. Leave this with me."
I quickly show her round the Sherwood Hideaway. It's a luxury cedar lodge and it's got a flat-screen telly, a hot tub and complimentary slippers. She is appeased. For now.
The following morning and we're in a clearing in the middle of a wood. Four other people have turned up and we're all standing, quietly eyeing each other up as Dave, our affable instructor, is lining up a row of bows and distributing arrows. We're going to compete against each other, to make it interesting.
At this point, the worst possible thing that could happen, happens. I score a bullseye with my first arrow. That small section of my brain that embroils me in pointless hobbies sparks into action. I've got a bullseye. I must, therefore, as I have always secretly suspected, be a genius at archery. This happened to actress Geena Davis, I think. She took up archery and nearly won a place in the US archery team at the Sydney Olympics. In my mind, my place in the 2012 Olympic squad is now only about the paperwork.
Never mind that my next four arrows shoot way over the target. Never mind that. My first arrow was straight and true.
I turn and nod serenely towards Danielle. She's got her scarf entangled in her bow string and has assumed monstrous form. If she was in a Japanese B-movie, she'd be called Moanzilla. Half an hour later and she's come last. To make matters worse, I've won.
Thank God then, for Dave. He gets three Segways out of a trailer. "Come on," he says, smiling, "I'll teach you how to ride them and then I'll take you round the park."
I don't think I've ever been more grateful in my life. Adrenalin Jungle is clearly brilliant. Set in wonderful woodland, the vast paintball areas are fantastically inventive: tanks, castles, there's even a church to play in. There's an assault course and, of course, the blindfold driving area. Although the least said about that the better.
And I loved the Segway. As we're quietly zooming down a gorgeous woodland track, I look back over my shoulder at Danielle skimming along behind me. Dare I say it, but she might actually be smiling.
Now then, where can I find an archery shop ?
? One-hour archery lessons at Adrenalin Jungle (adrenalinjungle.com) cost 20. Accommodation was provided at Sherwood Hideaway (sherwoodhideaway.com, lodges sleeping four start from 265 a week)

Burning rubber at London's IG Nocturne may be the most pointless cycling contest ever, but that is what makes it fun
Some things are pointless. But it doesn't stop them being fun, such fun in fact, that we turn them into competitions. Take skidding for example, something my friends and I did as kids, just for kicks. We'd cycle as fast as possible before slamming on the back brake and jamming a foot down so that the back wheel flew round and grazed along the ground ? and, in my case, usually ruining my parents' lawn.
On Saturday 9 June the skid is back for big kids everywhere, namely those on fixed-wheel ? 'fixie' ? bikes, as the annual IG Nocturne returns to the area around Smithfield Market in London. This mini cycling festival is free to spectators and includes various competitions for cyclists of all types and abilities including the Brooks Penny Farthing Race, the cult Tern Folding Bike Race and, my favourite, the Fixed Gear Schwalbe Longest Skid Competition.
This competition is by no means the first of its kind. Caspar Hughes, an ex-cycle courier, tells me that skid competitions in fact originate from Cycle Courier Championships. "In the itinerary of races, along with skid competitions, they have the normal package race where you have to deliver as many packages as possible in a pre-destined order around a course to various checkpoints. They also have track-stand competitions, which tests who can remain cleated, sitting down on the bike for the longest and after so many minutes you remove one hand, then two hands and then one foot ?"
Hughes, who is now owner of Rollapaluza, a company that livens up office parties and pubs with stationary bike races, used to ride 50-100 miles a day on a fixed-gear bike during his cycle courier days. "Skidding is definitely is an art form to do it properly and for more than 40 or 50 metres, but it's pointless! Once you're at maximum speed, you have to take the weight off the back wheel by shifting your body weight forwards and then lock your legs, therefore locking the back wheel. Then you need to sit back down, put enough weight on the back of the bike to start the bike skidding and lean as far forwards as possible to make the skid last as long as possible."
It's a lot harder than it sounds, I can tell you. Under Hughes' expert tutelage I had a go and, after many failed attempts, several where I wimped out completely and a few where I managed a one-second skid, I finally made a 4 inch mark on the ground with my back wheel. Pretty poor, especially when you consider that, at last year's IG Nocturne, 28-year-old Jim 'Hillbilly' Sullivan won the Fixed Gear Schwalbe Longest Skid Competition with a skid of over 100m. His prize was a bottle of champagne and a pair of Schwalbe Durano skid tyres.
Sullivan won't be taking part in this year's competition because he's doing the 257km Paris-Roubaix Cyclosportive in France on 10 June instead. He started riding fixed-gear bikes in 2007 after years of downhill mountain bike racing culminating in a major crash. "After that I basically lost the bottle to ride fast and do big jumps," he says. "So I ended up taking up road biking, managed to snap my handlebars and smash my knee into the ground which really hurt. I couldn't walk or ride very well so I started riding fixed-gear, which I thought would force me to pedal. That was about early 2007, and then it's just gone from there [?] I hate to sound cool and hip but this stuff is all a cultural thing ? people meet and do it for fun ? I actually met my wife riding fixed on the first tweed run."
Entry to the Fixed Gear Schwalbe Longest Skid Competition is free and available online on the London Nocturne website. There are no specific requirements except, according to race organisers, 'competitors need to have a fixed wheel bike and be pretty damned good on it.'
